"Jazz Critique" reviewed the album twice in the same issue, declaring the album "irresistible for 1920s–1950s retro standard lovers." "CD Journal" (one of the top selling music magazines in Japan) described the album as a "modern day nostalgic story based on the jazz standards of the good old days."

In America, a review of the import CD on the "Geoff Wilbur Music Blog" by Eric Harabadian (Down Beat) exploded in popularity and became the blog's most read review of all time. This review can be read at: geoffwilburmusic.com/2021/11/04/laura-ainsworth-top-shelf/

about

Written by Frank Loesser and Victor Schertzinger for the movie "Kiss The Boys Goodbye" (1941). “That’s How I Got My Start” and the title song “Kiss The Boys Goodbye” were both initially recorded by Broadway star Mary Martin, who was also the movie’s lead actress. Bea Wain re-recorded both songs soon thereafter.

lyrics

Once I met a cloak-and-suiter
Never was a suitor cuter
My wardrobe grew more ample with each sample
And that’s how I got my start

Then I met a famous flyer
Goodness, was that guy a liar
He loved me like a brother (ha)
That’s another
But that’s how I got my start

Nobody has a string on me
Let people talk as they do
Nobody has a thing on me
Except mink and a bracelet or two

Prove it by my rich old banker
How I made that banker hanker
So let this be a lesson
Keep ’em guessin’
’Cause that’s how I got my start

Prove it by my rich old banker
How I made that banker lanker
So let this be a lesson
Keep ’em guessin’
’Cause that’s how I got my start
